Co-author: From Pedestrian to Automobile: The Impact of New Technology on the Walkability of Cities (with M. Dowding and M. Rehfuss). Baltimore, MD: Transportation Planning Magazine, 2008. The book reviews the history of the automobile and the evolution of the pedestrian wayfinding system. While sidewalks were invented in the nineteenth century for non-motorized travel, their real history begins with the development of pedestrian-friendly streets. The book argues that, even with the development of high speed highways in the twentieth century, the pedestrian wayfinding system has remained a public policy priority. The book reviews the history of public policy and research on pedestrian wayfinding, and presents a number of recommendations for improving walkability, including placing sidewalks and crossing signals at more prominent locations. The book won an award for best transportation policy book of 2008 from the International Academy of Urban and Regional Research. Reviews: J. Transport Econ., SR, and Sustainability. [Korean translation: Korean Research Institute of Transportation Industries, 2009.]
